First Look – “Validated: The Makeup of Val Garland”

www.astairwaytofashion.com
Validated: The Makeup of Val Garland

In the backstage of fashion shows there is always a creative atmosphere, an ongoing process thought for months, where everything has to go perfectly according to the vision of designers and the makeup artists have to create the exact vision in a relatively short time. There is such a teamwork where coordination has to be perfect, and Val Garland, with her infinite creative genius, has been doing it for 30 years. We live in between two worlds, the tangible one and the world of the online, where it’s easy for us to scroll through our phone to find everything we want, but the books have their own charm, they say a life story that you can read, smell and imagine again anytime,
It took two years for this book to see the light of day and it is a book about life lived out of passion. Without passion, I am telling you, one does not resist the alert rhythms, nor reach high heights. That’s why we have a Lady Gaga with whom the artist has worked – her alien style cheekbones on the cover of the album “Born This Way” created by Val – the biggest fashion shows like Giambattista Vali, Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood, collaborations with  countless leading magazines – all for the love of color, perfection and creativity.

Italian Cuisine – At The Table With Missoni Family

The Missoni Family Cook Book - Rosita Missoni

The Missonis are well-known for their colorful, vivid and dynamic vision of life which they all share and express so lovely through fashion. But they do have another passion – the love for cooking! It’s been in the making for seven years and now it has finally seen the light – The Missoni Family Cook Book at Assouline Editions– a gathering of 130 family recipes passed down for four generations.

Francesco Maccapani Missoni, together with his gorgeous grandmother, Rosita Missoni and with the help of his mother, Angela Missoni, came up with the idea, only from a strong desire to preserve family traditions. “The idea was for everyone in the family to have their own recipe book from the last two generations. In 2013, my grandfather passed away and my grandmother was 80 at the time, so it made me start thinking that in the future when she passes away, these traditions could get lost,” Francesco said to WWD.

People buy Missoni to be part of our lives, to feel like they’re part of the tribe. They relate to the brand because they can see we are simple people who enjoy life. We maintain a balance between the real world and fashion,” said Maccapani Missoni.

We are really seasonal. At home, we only use fresh, local, seasonal produce, and most herbs and vegetables come from our garden,” says Franscesco Maccapani Missoni.

This is Not a F*cking Street Style Book by Adam Katz Sinding

Born in San Francisco but based in Copenhagen, Adam Kats Sinding is a cult fashion week photographer, on the move 300 days per year, working with magazines like Vogue and W, gathering the material that now makes the subject of his book – This is Not a F*cking Street Style Book.

www.astairwaytofashion.com
This is Not a F*cking Street Style Book by Adam Katz Sinding

The title is pretty succint – “Generally, street style is a lie yet people eat that shit up, believing that they are seeing something organic. But then we have the likes of Christine Centenera, Jo Ellison, Isabelle Kountoure, Natasha Goldenberg and co., and we realise that there’s hope. This is how I can stay sane,”  Katz Sinding explained.

The book is just a snapshot of today. You can look at it in five years and that’s when you’ll get the real reward — ‘look how we dressed back then… man, we looked ridiculous/cool/young’. What’s the point of any book except to open our mind to some other part of life?” Adam Katz said.

Today, street style photos are used to sell readers/viewers clothes. They make trends real and I don’t want to play a part in that. Instead, I want to show some kid in Albania what it feels like to be outside the Rick Owens show with all the freaks, show an old lady in Iowa how her peers dressed at a Chanel show. It’s a peephole of sorts. Don’t buy the stuff in the photos I take — but maybe buy my book? Ha, I’m such a hypocrite,” he adds honestly.

Sunday Readings – 3 Books That Will Change Your Life Perception

There are so many ways to enlarge our world and I believe that – along with travelling which I am addicted to, for it connects you instantly to the culture of the places and people’s customs – reading adds up a new value to our lives. What can be best than people sharing their life experiences with the  solid purpose of opening new perspectives and new doors towards our evolution? Always have been a reading lover and today I bring to you the 3 books that I recently read and opened up a new way of seeing life for me. Just like in a fashion editorial where each photographer, given the same outfits and model, will create a different story, his story. We are all writers, we write our lives minute after minute, just didn’t have the awareness of that till now. And sometimes, when life takes us in places where we don’t want to be and have no clue how we ended up there, reading makes a difference, because it reveals that all the situations we encounter are self-made and in the same time vital for taking our life to a completely new level.. And I mean personal development books like these, that made me realise that we are the master art directors of the movie called “Life”, and we create all the stories that in the end will make THE story, the life story, of each and every one of us! Don’t waste a minute of it! Is the best gift that we were given – sadly whatever comes for free we take for granted, such as our health, the air that we breathe, the restless pounding heart in our chests, the hearing of music, the delight of tasting a tiramisu, the sight that explores the beauty of this amazing planet, the feelings, the free will.

Whenever you read a good book, somewhere in the world a door opens to allow in more light.” – Vera Nazarian

Enjoy this Sunday’s books proposal!

The Power of Now – Eckhart Tolle

It is not uncommon for people to spend their whole life waiting to start living.” – Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now.

Never content or in a gratitude state of mind, we are always on the rush to either be someplace else or have something more – like a different house or drive a better car, fancier chlotes and so on – and we miss the entire process of life happening to us in this exact moment, NOW, no other time, not the past, nevertheless the future. “The Power of Now” is a spiritual guide, translated in over 30 foreign languages, recommended by Oprah Winfrey, helping people to find their true and deepest self. Powerful!

Rich Dad Poor Dad- Robert Kiyosaki

When you are young work to learn, not to earn” – Robert Kiyosaki.

If you take a close look to all the succesful people you’ll notice that the one thing they all have in common is that they never stop learning and improving, and they have an incredible positive, solution focused mindset. Knowledge is power people say – fulfilled people say that putting your knowledges to work, THAT is power! One of the books I stumbled upon recently is “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki, sold in over 32 million copies – born in India and raised in Hawaii, american businessman and author, known in the entire world for his financial educational books, had the desire to help people manage in a clever way their assets for a better future. With analogies based on Kiyosaki’s life, the book underlines the importance of financial independence and  building wealth through investing in real estate, assets, or starting your own business. Basically a financial education that we can all benefit from.

The Power Of Intention – Wayne Dyer

You don’t need to be better than any one else you just need to be better than you used to be” – Wayne W. Dyer

Wayne was a psychologist and international speaker and author, with more than 40 published books in the field of self-development. He changed the vision of the world, the value of his work is simply mind-blowing, helping us to take a deep look at ourselves, embrace the inner child that we are and ask him: “Who are you? Is it ok where I have taken you so far? Are you happy?

A mind at peace, a mind centered and not focused on harming others, is stronger than any physical force in the universe.” – Wayne Dyer

Wish you all an amazing Sunday! : )

Harper’s Bazaar Interview: What’s the story behind using food in your fashion illustrations?

Gretchen Roehrs: It all started as a bit of a taunt to a friend on the East coast who missed fresh fruits and vegetables during the winter months. I figured if they couldn’t eat anything fresh, they could at least laugh at a few ladies wearing blackberries as frocks.

HB: Do you think food and fashion have parallels?

GR: There are tremendous parallels between food and fashion. Both really cater to the visual sense, but it’s just as important that they have a pleasing texture. Fashion is a lot like cooking in that you can make up for average ingredients or fabrics with beautiful execution and care. Christina Tosi of Milk Bar does with with her delicious compost cookies just as well as Rei Kawakubo can turn a trash bag into a gown.

HB: What’s your favorite food to work with?

GR: Fruits and vegetables have always been so attractive to me, especially when they’re put on display every week at my neighborhood’s farmers market. They beg to be captured before I eat them!

HB: What inspires you?

GR: I’m inspired by all sorts of everyday, mundane things. Color is huge for me, which is why I like cooking and drawing with the most vibrant colors and produce I can find. Walking through Chinatown is a sensory overload for me because of all the funny trinkets, exotic fruits and interesting smells.

HB: What’s your artistic process like?

GR: The food usually tells me what it wants to be, but sometimes I have to contort it into a look. From there I sketch around it and let it come to life.

Photograph from “The LouLou de la Falaise” book by Natasha Fraser-Cavassoni

LouLou de la Falaise – the eternal muse, and the first to have inspirited with her bold yet elegant style, was Yves Saint Laurent – a genius of the era, born in Algeria, with an almost inhuman sense of aesthetics and beauty. They first met five years after Yves and Pierre Berge, his life and business partner, opened up the eponymous fashion house – Yves Saint Laurent, back in 1963. She was his muse for thirty years, and became a close friend that he entrusted the house’s knitwear and accessory department. Their story is vibrant, a story filled with drug addictions, parties and unleashed creative spirit, demons and fabric scents, a story that LouLou de la Falaise continued by being the favourite model of the biggest fashion photographers of the era, like Richard Avedon and Helmut Newton. A story that took her to a collaboration with Oscar de la Renta for his jewellery collections. A story told by Natasha Fraser-Cavassoni, in a new Rizzoli book – The LouLou de la Falaise – available at Rizzoli.com for € 50.00.

Westwood About Her Abusive Love Story

www.astairwaytofashion.com
Vivienne Westwood and Malcom McLaren

As i brought to your attention in a previous post, one of the most anticipated books of fashion industry, showcasing the life of controversary Vivienne Westwood is about to see the light. Inside the book Westwood talks about the emotional and physical abuse she suffered with her former love, and father of her younger son, Malcom McLaren, the manager of Sex Pistols.

Because he’s dead, I don’t mind saying this: he behaved incredibly cruelly. Professionally, personally, in every way. I used to hit Malcolm. One day he hit me back… He had this think where he couldn’t leave the flat until he made me cry. I wanted to feel bad or something – he was trying to draw blood. It was simpler to give in; to give way to the tears so he would stop. Real tears have never come back for me. I haven’t cried properly since.

He was a horrible bully. It was archetypal, a textbook case of a dysfunctional, toxic thing – a sort of co-dependency where making her cry allowed him to feel whatever he needed to feel” – Westwood tells of her love story with McLaren.

Vivienne Westwood, by Vivienne Westwood and Ian Kelly will be released on October 9 and is available to preorder at www.viviennewestood.com, for $ 31.45.

Vivienne Westwood Unveils The Story Of Her Life

www.astairwaytofashion.com
Vivienne Westood by Vivienne Westood & Ian Kelly

The british fashion icon, Vivienne Westood, decided to unveil the story of her life with a biographical book, for the first time ever, written by the designer herself with the contribution of renowed biographer, Ian Kelly. A controversal figure in the fashion and political world, Vivienne gathered together 464 pages of wild and glamorous life, with friends like Naomi Campbell, Pamela Anderson and Prince Charles contributing anecdotes during the two years needed for the writing of the book.

The story begins with the opening of Westood’s first vintage clothing store with Malcolm McLaren, manager of Sex Pistols, on the King Road in 1970. Since then, with her unusual way of being, she created an empire, the british culture and history remaining her main inspiration font.

The book, from whose cover the queen of fashion, photographed by Jurgen Teller, is watching us, is available to pre-order at www.viviennewestood.com, for $ 31.45.
