Château Marmont, Los Angeles
Château Marmont, Los Angeles

Château Marmont doesn’t just sit geographically at the heart of Los Angeles, the hotel has also become the focus of plenty of myth and mystery thanks to the many celebrities who have frequented the gothic manor since it was built in 1920.  And for good reason: Jim Morrison, it is said, nearly fell to his death there when trying to walk across the roof, photographer Helmut Newton died there in 2004 after his car crashed into an entrance way, as did John Belushi, who in 1982 suffered from an overdose while staying in Bungalow 3.

Set within four hectares of isolated Sussex countryside, this medieval castle complete with parapets and aportcullis was once inhabited by members of the house of Tudor. Just as imposing as ever, visitors to the hotel are treated to the daily raising of the drawbridge and talk of a ghost, the spirit of a servant, who, avenging her death 700 years ago at the hands of a bishop is rumored to wander the grounds and haunt the Herstmonceux room.

At the sight of Edinburgh’s Witchery by the Castle restaurant and hotel it’s hard not to think of Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula. This richly decorated guest house filled with red velvet curtains, gilded décor and impressive wall paintings owes its name to King James who led a witch hunt upon the city’s Castle Hill in the 12th Century . A visit not for the faint hearted…

Considered by Oscar Wilde as his second home, Ashford castle with its Victorian architecture and 26000 hectares of green parkland has today become a hotel and any kid’s dream location for a Halloween escape. The reason? The castle was used as the setting of the famed Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for the movies based on JK Rowling’s Harry Potter books. Today, visitors can stroll in the “Forbidden Forest,” visit secret rooms, take magic classes and watch screenings of the Potter movies.

  1. Stayed in Ashford Castle many years ago … beautiful views from our room of the mists rising over the loch .. great setting for Halloween ( or Samhain as the original Celtic end-of-summer festival is called).

  2. Very cool! I once stayed at a haunted hostel, Carbisdale Castle in Scotland, pretty remote, beautiful and scary statues and overall very spooky ~Anna~
